HID is an acronym for "high intensity discharge." The HID bulbs contain xenon gas. The problem is that none (that we have encountered) will last for more than a couple months at the very most, and that won't help you see the road at night. When it comes to yellow or sandblasted headlight lenses, some drivers like to try the magic headlight cleaners, and that's because some of these products do actually work. Both can be embarrassing and won't get you a passing inspection sticker. This really gives the car and truck designers a blank canvas to work with and makes for great looking vehicles.Ī con of this type of headlight is that the plastic lenses eventually turn yellow or fall off completely. Pros and Cons of Composite/Halogen HeadlightsĬomposite or halogen headlights have the ability to incorporate turn signals and even fog lamps into their design. ![]() For this reason, many people call these lights "halogen headlights." The vast majority of them have plastic lenses, though there are a few exceptions here and there. They have replaceable bulbs, which are filled with halogen gas. This meant that car and truck manufacturers could finally design the headlights to "flow" with the styling of the vehicle itself and not hide them behind plastic covers.Ĭomposite lights came right after the sealed beam headlight. It was then that the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety team fully removed the entire sealed beam rule, and allowed plastic lenses and replaceable light bulbs. The Camaro RS/SS and Buick Riviera are two great examples of this.īy 1978, rectangle headlights were finally permitted, and many car manufacturers rejoiced. To make vehicles look good when they all used the exact same lighting, many manufacturers had headlamp covers. There were only two sizes of sealed beam lights available between 19, which were the round 5.75 inch and 7 inch style. If the bulb burns out, the whole headlamp needs to be replaced. The bulb, the lens, and the housing are all connected and cannot be separated without destroying the light itself. Sealed beam headlights are one-piece designs with glass lenses. Let's discuss the different types of headlights. Today there are different types, such as halogen, xenon, and HID headlights. They can be called " headlights" (without the space), "head lights" (two words), headlamps, or head lamps. "Headlights" don't even have a standard name. These days, for the sake of styling and improved visibility, lighting up the darkness has become a bit more complex. ![]() They were inexpensive to buy and easily found in every single auto part store in America. Did you know that for the 42 years between 19, sealed beam headlights were required on all vehicles in the United States, with only four styles allowed? Imagine what modern cars and trucks would look like if they all shared the same headlights.īefore 1984, headlamps were easy to replace with a Phillips screwdriver.

![]() He performed a series of experiments using a beam of high-speed, positively charged alpha particles (α particles) that were produced by the radioactive decay of radium α particles consist of two protons and two neutrons (you will learn more about radioactive decay in the chapter on nuclear chemistry). The next major development in understanding the atom came from Ernest Rutherford, a physicist from New Zealand who largely spent his scientific career in Canada and England. ![]() (b) Nagaoka proposed that atoms resembled the planet Saturn, with a ring of electrons surrounding a positive “planet.” (credit a: modification of work by “Man vyi”/Wikimedia Commons credit b: modification of work by “NASA”/Wikimedia Commons) (a) Thomson suggested that atoms resembled plum pudding, an English dessert consisting of moist cake with embedded raisins (“plums”). A competing model had been proposed in 1903 by Hantaro Nagaoka, who postulated a Saturn-like atom, consisting of a positively charged sphere surrounded by a halo of electrons ( ). In 1904, Thomson proposed the “plum pudding” model of atoms, which described a positively charged mass with an equal amount of negative charge in the form of electrons embedded in it, since all atoms are electrically neutral. However, the positively charged part of an atom was not yet well understood. Scientists had now established that the atom was not indivisible as Dalton had believed, and due to the work of Thomson, Millikan, and others, the charge and mass of the negative, subatomic particles-the electrons-were known. The term “electron” was coined in 1891 by Irish physicist George Stoney, from “ electric i on.” Although controversial at the time, Thomson’s idea was gradually accepted, and his cathode ray particle is what we now call an electron, a negatively charged, subatomic particle with a mass more than one thousand-times less that of an atom. (credit a: modification of work by Nobel Foundation credit b: modification of work by Eugen Nesper credit c: modification of work by “Kurzon”/Wikimedia Commons)īased on his observations, here is what Thomson proposed and why: The particles are attracted by positive (+) charges and repelled by negative (−) charges, so they must be negatively charged (like charges repel and unlike charges attract) they are less massive than atoms and indistinguishable, regardless of the source material, so they must be fundamental, subatomic constituents of all atoms. Simultaneous deflections by applied electric and magnetic fields permitted Thomson to calculate the mass-to-charge ratio of the particles composing the cathode ray. (c) In the cathode ray, the beam (shown in yellow) comes from the cathode and is accelerated past the anode toward a fluorescent scale at the end of the tube. (b) This is an early cathode ray tube, invented in 1897 by Ferdinand Braun. Thomson produced a visible beam in a cathode ray tube. The results of these measurements indicated that these particles were much lighter than atoms ( ). In similar experiments, the ray was simultaneously deflected by an applied magnetic field, and measurements of the extent of deflection and the magnetic field strength allowed Thomson to calculate the charge-to-mass ratio of the cathode ray particles. This beam was deflected toward the positive charge and away from the negative charge, and was produced in the same way with identical properties when different metals were used for the electrodes. ![]() When high voltage was applied across the electrodes, a visible beam called a cathode ray appeared between them. This apparatus consisted of a sealed glass tube from which almost all the air had been removed the tube contained two metal electrodes. If matter were composed of atoms, what were atoms composed of? Were they the smallest particles, or was there something smaller? In the late 1800s, a number of scientists interested in questions like these investigated the electrical discharges that could be produced in low-pressure gases, with the most significant discovery made by English physicist J. In our flag, the colors are Dutch, the arms are English, the crest is distinctively American, but the flag as such is the flag of the City, which has grown from these beginnings to be the home of all nations, the great cosmopolitan city of the world, the City of New York. The committee described their proposed flag this way: The committee consulted with the New-York Historical Society to study historical seals used by city government under the Dutch and English, to incorporate their symbolism into the new city seal and flag. In 1914, to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the installation of the first mayor under English rule, the City Art Commission appointed a blue-ribbon committee to create the city's first official seal and flag. By the end of the 19th century, the city was flying an unofficial flag featuring a round blue seal on a white field. Next in the series, we’ll examine frequency and pitch. A sound 1,000 times more powerful than near total silence is 30 dB. A sound 100 times more powerful than near total silence is 20 dB. It's a logarithmic scale, so a sound 10 times more powerful is 10 dB. The logarithmic nature of the decibel scale can be tough to wrap your mind around, but it’s important to your understanding of the nature and extent of both hearing loss and hearing protection. On the decibel scale, the smallest audible sound (near total silence) is 0 dB. Check out this Noise Thermometer (a PDF file), which shows the range of various sounds on the decibel scale. So, a sound that’s 120 dB-a jet engine, for example-is one trillion times the intensity of the smallest sound a human can hear. It’s mind-boggling how quickly the logarithmic scale of decibels goes up from there: 0 dBīasically, for every 10 dB increase, we’re adding a zero to the amount of intensity versus the threshold of hearing. When using a multimeter, the decibel scale can be used to measure the sound pressure level (SPL) in. It is a logarithmic scale, meaning that the values on the scale increase exponentially. The decibel (dB) is a unit used to measure the relative loudness of a sound. For deep learning models, we usually use this rather than a simple Spectrogram. It uses the Decibel Scale instead of Amplitude to indicate colors. It uses the Mel Scale instead of Frequency on the y-axis. ![]() Zero on the decibel scale is the “threshold of human hearing”: it’s the least intense sound a human can detect. The decibel scale on a multimeter indicates the intensity or level of sound. A Mel Spectrogram makes two important changes relative to a regular Spectrogram that plots Frequency vs Time. To see what this looks like, we need to know where we’re starting. Here, going 10 units up the scale increases the previous number by a factor of 10, not by 10 units. Easy enough, right? However, a logarithmic scale is very different. If you start at zero centimeters and add 10, you’re at 10 centimeters start at 10 centimeters, add 10 more, and you’re at 20 centimeters. Think of a linear scale as a tape measure: going 10 units up the scale gets you 10 units more than where you started. According to this scale, 10 dBm is equal to 10 times the reference power, or 10 milliwatts 20 dBm is equal to 100 times the reference power, or 100 milliwatts. (The Richter scale of earthquake intensity is another example of a logarithmic scale.) (figure below) The reference point, 0 dBm, is defined as 1 milliwatt of electrical power dissipated by a 600 load. We measure sound intensity on a logarithmic base 10 scale, which proceeds in multiples of 10, rather than on a linear scale. Human ears can detect an incredibly wide range of sounds. You’ve certainly heard the word “decibel” more than once but do you know how the decibel scale works? Understanding the decibel scale will give you insight into the degrees of hearing loss, and help when it comes to hearing protection. Sometimes you only need a clip to keep back or up those pesky little hairs that fall out of a ponytail. Some clips that you could use for sectioning are duck bill clips, alligator clips, and claw clips. These clips are all about functionality and would not typically be worn out and about. Depending on what you are using your clips for will make a huge difference in which type of hair clip you use. Hair clips are used in today’s world in a few different ways. If you are looking for a hair clip as an accessory, I love claw clips because they come in many different shapes, sizes, and styles and do a great job of holding your hair where you want it all day. These clips do a fantastic job of gripping the hair and securing it where you want it while sectioning for color, updos, styling, and whatever else you want your hair moved away from. The number one clip I go to most of the time in the salon is alligator clips. However, there are so many other things that I like to use specific clips for, like quickly pulling all of my hair back into a quick updo, sectioning large amounts of hair, and adding cute pops of fashion to any hairstyle. For example, I once styled someone’s entire head with curls solely using hair clips, which would have only been possible with curl-setting clips.
